IOM Men and Women Teams Off To A Flying Start

The Island Games kicked off yesterday(Sunday)for the Isle of Man Football teams with both the Men & Women's teams securing a victory.

The Isle of Man women’s team started their NatWest Island Games in Gotland with a deserved win, defeating Ynys Mon 3-0 at Vaskinde, scoring all three goals in eight minutes in the second half.

It proved a frustrating first half for the Manx, creating a number of chances but was thwarted by the Ynys Mon goalkeeper Nicola Davies who pulled off a number of saves.

The Isle of Man women’s team continued to dominate in the second half, the break-through eventually came on 69 minutes. The Manx countered after regaining possession from a Welsh throw-in, Dillon’s cross-field pass on the left was collected by Wignall, out-muscled her marker and clean through, drove a low, powerful shot into the net.

Three minutes later, the Manx extended their lead. Wignall slipped a through-ball to Gawne putting her clear and homing towards goal, chipped her effort inside the left post to make it 2-0.

The Isle of Man scored a deserved third on 76 minutes. Dillon was free on the right and showing some skill, passed inside, Gawne’s initial shot was parried but made sure at the second attempt for her 20th Island Games goal ensuring the women’s team completed a fourth consecutive, opening Island Games fixture with a victory

The Men's team started their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Hitra at Farosund.

Nick Hurt's side took an early lead on 8 minutes when Calum Morrissey teed up Ciaran McNulty who brilliantly fired it into the net from 20 yards. It didn't take long for the Manx side to score again with McNulty receiving a long throw from Liam Cowin before striking it past the keeper after 24 minutes. McNulty completed his hat-trick on 42 minutes when his strike partner Morrissey played him in behind the defence to finish expertly past the keeper.

Morrissey was on the score sheet himself after 52 minutes when Sam Caine played a ball into the striker's feet on the edge of the box and Morrissey brilliantly turned the defender and finished into the bottom corner from 20 yards out. Morrissey grabbed his 2nd of the game 10 minutes before the end when he volleyed home a Jack McVey free kick to ensure a great start to the campaign for Nick Hurt's Men.
